Markets

for crafty types who don’t dig rose-scented doilies

market

Celebrating all that is irreverent, kitchy, delightfully offensive & made lovingly by hand.

The Craft Cartel is a posse of radical crafters. Set up in 2007, we organise Trashbag Rehab (hands on therapy for delinquent crafters), a blog, a podcast, Flock 'n' Flogs (impromtu markets), legit markets, craftivism, street crrraft, craft talks, Craft Ins & general ace-ness. Everything is open to everyone & everything is free or cheap - we are not Capitalists, we are Craftivists.

Save The World With Crocheted Explosives!

Craft Cartel are inviting all those opposed to the proposed Gunns Bell Bay Pulp Mill and other loggers of native forests to get their knit on and whip up a ton of crocheted explosives. Rise up gentle people! We want to collect lots & lots & lots to let the nation know how many are against the dastardly Mill. When even the knitters get mad, someone's gotta listen.

The project was officially launched at the last Trashbag Rehab event, Bang! Knit! Purl! KaPOW! but we'll be collecting explosives until the end of October 2010.

There is absolutely no reason for us to be logging native bush & forrest in Australia. Each knitted explosive you make will be strung together with those made by other lovely community members until we have grown a magnificent crafed bomb tree to show our strong opposition to this stupidity.

Pledge to add to our woolen weapon stockpile by contacting casey (at) craftcartel.com.

Check out the tutorials below & get knitting!

And in the meantime think about sending some coin or a note of support to the super crew at The Wilderness Society who are leading many awesome campaigns including one against the proposed Gunns' Pulp Mill.

Flock 'n' Flog Markets

Small-time crafters flock to an inner-Melburn location to flog their wares.

Subscribe to the Newsletter for the next Flock 'n'Flog

Costumes encouraged!

Exhorbitant retail rental costs have pretty much pushed small-time arts & crafters out of the market. Which is why you see so much cutesy craft crap around town - if it's not easily palatable it's not going to sell in high enough volumes to pay display costs. Crafters who might want to be experimental, subversive or political with their work are forced to produce benign and boring stuff just to cover costs.
